CTEC renovations completed for $5.2 million

College Celebrates “Grand re-opening”

The public attended an open house event at Yavapai College’s Career and Technical Education Center (CTEC) at the Prescott airport on Saturday, October 10. The open house was intended to celebrate CTEC and learn more about the facility’s recent renovations and the valuable programs it offers. A brief program of welcome and remarks about the project was given to those in attendance.CTEC GRAND OPENING SHOP 2

The CTEC Campus is enclosed by a 108,000 square foot building, which sits on an eight-acre site. It houses 12 programs and the Yavapai College Rural Center for Entrepreneurship.

The $5.2 million renovation accomplished the following:

Added four new classrooms

Expanded space and labs for several programs

Incorporated 10,000 square feet of storage space

Enlarged the student computer commons

Created two computer labs

Replaced aging overhead lights with energy efficient LED lights

Added noise abatement features.

Programs offered through CTEC include Electronic Technology, Gunsmithing, Welding, Industrial Machine Mechanic, and Applied Pre-Engineering. The College reports that technical education is one of Yavapai College’s fastest growing offerings and prepares students for well-paying careers while helping to boost the local economy.

Blatant unfairness. None of the programs offered at CTEC today are available to High School students in Sedona and the Verde Valley.  Almost all of them are available to High School students on the West side of the County.  The unfairness of this situation has existed now for about 8 years, when the College administration closed down the development of the Northern Arizona Regional Skills Center on the Verde Campus and moved most, if not all, CTE training to the Prescott side of Yavapai County.

College may seek foreign students to save aviation program

College may also have to buy or lease its own airplanes

If Congress has its way, Yavapai College, originally created to serve the needs of County residents, may soon own or lease its own fleet of airplanes and recruit wealthy foreign students to train in them.  This is a far cry from the original purpose of the Community College.  However, this is the reality of the Veterans Administration recent crack down on Yavapai College’s failure to meet student ratio guidelines of 15% non-veterans in its aviation program.

AVIATION PROBLEMS JOHN MORGAN SLIDE

The consequence of the VA decision about the College means the loss of thousands of dollars in tuition to the College, which charges $662 per credit to veterans in the program rather than the $75 normal per credit tuition.  It also means millions of dollars in lost revenue to Guidance Aviation, which can charge somewhere around $200,000 per veteran for some programs—all paid by the Federal Government.aviation picture of planes on tarmack

CTEC Dean John Morgan reported these possibilities to the Governing Board at the October 7 meeting. You may view Dean Morgan discussing this issue with the Governing Board by clicking here

East and West County High School CTEC training opportunities differ

Whether you live on the East or West side of the County makes a big difference to high school students when it comes to educational opportunities

CTEC6The opportunity for high school students in the County to take classes at the Yavapai Community College Career and Technical Education Center (CTEC) differ greatly.  Whether you can attend turns on which side of Mingus Mountain you live on.

If you live on the Prescott side of Mingus Mountain, you can attend classes at CTEC, which is becoming a state-of-the-art training center.  If you live on the East side of Mingus Mountain, you cannot attend classes at CTEC.

The Blog has asked the College to provide it with the number of students from the West side of the Mountain that attended CTEC this fall (a spring 2014 estimate put the number at 200).    So far, it has not replied to the request.  It is clear that no students from the East side of the Mountain attended classes there.  Hopefully, when the College reopens following the holidays, accurate information about high school student enrollment at CTEC will be made available.

Correction to November story: East County students did attend CTEC Career Day

Data shows that students from Mingus and Camp Verde High Schools attended Career Day

CorrectionThis Blog ran a story in November based on a newspaper article stating that only students from the West side of the Valley attended a career day on November 21, 2014 at the Career and Technical Education Center at the Prescott airport. The Blog has been informed that this was inaccurate.

Data from the Community College indicates that 40 students from Mingus Union High School and 30 students from Camp Verde High School attended the event. No students from Sedona Red Rock attended the event.

Here are the attendance figures as provided by the College:
Number of students who attended (and schools represented)
• Aspire = 6
• AAEC = 30
• Bagdad HS = 40
• Bradshaw Mountain HS = 50
• Camp Verde HS = 30
• Chino Valley HS = 40
• Mingus Union HS = 40
• Mingus Mountain Acd. = 10
• Prescott HS = 60
• Seligman HS = 13

The Blog encourages its readers to send corrections from reliable sources whenever it publishes information that appears to be in error. It appreciates receiving the above information from the Community College.
