COLLEGE HOPES TO MAKE OFFER FOR NEW VERDE/SEDONA DEAN IN A WEEK

Finalists completed interviews for job last Friday

Yavapai Community College President Dr. Lesa Rhine is hoping to make an offer to one of the two finalists in the Dean’s search for the Verde Campus/Sedona Center within a week.  That is according to a story in the Verde Independent of January 19, 2020 by Bill Helm where the President is quoted.

It is anticipated that either Tina Redd or Emily McRobbie will be chosen. They attended a meet-and-greet session on Friday where each gave a 25 minute  presentation about their qualifications for the job, which was followed by a series of written questions.  You can review the  biographical information each of the two candidates supplied the College by clicking here.

GOVERNING BOARD BUDGET AND GENERAL MEETINGS TUESDAY, JANUARY 21

Budget hearing begins at 9 a.m.; general meeting at 1 p.m.; both at the Rock House on Prescott Campus and  open to public

The Yavapai Community College Governing Board will hold a budget meeting Tuesday, January 21 beginning at 9 a.m.  The meeting will be held in the Rock House on the Prescott Campus.  The public may attend.

The Governing Board will hold its regular meeting Tuesday, January 21  beginning at 1 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Rock House on the Prescott Campus.

There is an opportunity for the public to address the Board at this meeting, according to the agenda published by the College. This is an opportunity for residents of Yavapai County to provide their input on any issue within the jurisdiction of the Yavapai College District Governing Board.

Members of the Governing Board are not supposed to discuss or take legal action on matters raised during an Open Call to the public unless the matters are properly noticed for discussion and legal action. A citizen wishing to address the Board should complete a “Request to Speak” form, and give it to the Recording Secretary and be prepared to limit his or her remarks to the designated time (usually three minutes).

Under Arizona law, the public has a right to attend, listen, tape record or videotape these meetings. The public may not disrupt, but may speak during the call to the public at the beginning of this meeting if the call is on the agenda. See Ariz. Att’y Gen. Op. No. I78-001.

JAMES PEREY TO BECOME VP OF STRATEGIC INITIATIVES

Moving to Prescott Campus after almost eight years as Verde/Sedona Executive Dean

After eight years as Executive Dean for the Verde Valley Campus and Sedona Center, Dr. James Perey will be shortly moving  to the Prescott Campus where he will assume the duties as Associate Vice President for Strategic Initiatives. His new duties will include supporting online learning and Open Educational Resources efforts throughout the District. 

Perey will also partner with other faculty to re-imagine the college’s career services and integrate career exploration and planning into Yavapai’s pathways model, according to President Lisa Rhine.

The move to Prescott will occur once his successor on the Verde Campus/Sedona Center is announced.  Two candidates for that position were interviewed on Friday, January 17, 2020.

NAU PRESIDENT RITA CHENG TO REPAY PART OF TRAVEL SPENDING CRITICIZED BY AUDIT

Will reimburse the Northern Arizona University Foundation for the difference between coach and business-class tickets involving trip to Russia

In a January 14 article by Rachel Leingang of the  Arizona Republic it was reported that Northern Arizona University President Rita Cheng will personally pay back some of the money highlighted by auditors involving a trip to Russia. 

Cheng told Ms. Leingang that the trip benefitted  the university in several ways. However, she said that she “felt like this needs to get behind us.  I need to take responsibility for the lack of documentation pertaining to the ticketing of my travel, and I’ll be repaying the foundation for the cost of difference between the business and coach travel.”

YAVAPAI COLLEGE’S VERDE ART GALLERY PRESENTS A SPECIAL EXHIBIT OF MARK HEMLEBEN’S PLEIN AIR STUDIES

Opening reception is from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Friday, January 17 on Verde Campus,  Building F

Yavapai Community College’s Verde Art Gallery will present a special exhibit of Mark Hemleben’s Plein Air studies created before the artist finalizes the work. The opening reception is from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Friday, January 17 at 601 Black Hills Dr., Building F in Clarkdale.

Hemleben is an award winning Plein Air painter from Jerome. His works are beloved and collected by art lovers around the globe, including William Shatner who is a collector.

Yavapai College Verde Art Gallery, 601 Black Hills Drive BLG F Clarkdale. Hours: Tuesday – Thursday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

SPECIAL EVENTS SCHEDULED FOR JAN 14 & 16 AT SEDONA CENTER & VERDE CAMPUS

Small business workshop at Sedona Center January 14 from 8:30 a.m. until noon; Clarkdale MATFORCE lunch-and-learn to educate on  stress, anxiety and depression in children  January 16 at 11:30 to be teleconferenced to Verde Campus, Building I, Room 118

SEDONA —Tuesday, Jan. 14 from 8:30 a.m. until noon you can attend a free City of Sedona small business series workshop on “Moving Toward Sustainability” at the Sedona Campus of Yavapai College.

In this workshop, you will hear from national experts and local businesses about their experience with sustainable business practices. Hear about what successful local businesses are doing to stay sustainable, how it has helped their business and what they have learned. Email seves@sedonaaz.gov for more information.

CLARKDALE — MATFORCE is sponsoring a lunch-and-learn to educate on stress, anxiety and depression in children and how caregivers and professionals can unpack the symptoms, root causes and strategies to build resilience.

This presentation is at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 16 and will be teleconferenced to Yavapai College’s Verde Valley campus in Building I, Room 118. Yavapai College’s Verde Valley campus is at 601 Black Hills Drive in Clarkdale.

Shana Malone, director of compass evaluation and research, will be the workshop presenter. Malone has a diverse background as a therapist and researcher. She will discuss the biology and behaviors associated with stress in children and a framework for understanding common root causes. Malone will also address practical coping strategies as well as resources for building resilience in families, schools and the community.

OLLI MODEL CASTING CALL POSTED ON FACEBOOK

OLLI members photo shoot at  Sedona Center  Tuesday, Jan. 14, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m

 

According to a story by reporter Byvyto Starinskas in the Sunday, January 12, 2020 edition of the Verde Independent, the Community  College via the Sedona/Verde Valley  Osher Life Long Learning (OLLI) operation “is giving local people “ a modelling “ chance in their OLLI member photo shoot at the Yavapai College Sedona Center on Tuesday, Jan. 14.”  Mr. Starinskas writes that OLLI “ will be shooting both posed and candid photographs in the classrooms and on the campus. These photos will be used in future OLLI and Yavapai College print and digital media,” says the casting call put out to members.”

SENIOR CITIZEN DISCOUNT ON CREDIT CLASSES ENDS JANUARY 17

Must be citizen, County resident, and over 65 

Yavapai Community College is offering a 25% discount on credit classes to residents age 65+. An applicant must meet all of the eligibility requirements and register for ALL classes between January 6-17, 2020.

The Community College says that “to be guaranteed a spot in the class you want, register early. If you want to take advantage of the 25% discount, register the week before classes as space allows.”

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (Yavapai College Sedona/Verde Valley) will hold an open house Thursday, January 16 from 1:00 -3:00 at the Sedona Center, Room 34.  The guest speaker will be Chef Robert Barr of the Sedona Culinary Institute.  The event is free and the public is invited to attend.

TWO FINALISTS FOR VERDE VALLEY/SEDONA CENTER DEAN TO BE INTERVIEWED JANUARY 17

Yavapai Community College has selected two finalists for the position of Verde Valley/Sedona Dean.  They will be interviewed by faculty at a forum to be held Friday, January 17.  Dr. Tina Redd will give a presentation and then answer faculty questions at 8:30 a.m.  Dr. Emily McRobbie weill follow at 9:30 a.m.

Dr. Tina Redd

Dr. Tina Redd:  She earned her doctorate at the University of Washington and her MA at Southern Illinois University, teaching at two large research universities for over a decade before focusing her time and energy on community college education. Dr. Redd has served as Regional President for the Community College Humanities Association and is a graduate of the AACC Roueche Future Leaders Institute.

Dr. Tina Redd currently serves as the first Director of Central Oregon Community College’s Redmond Campus. Prior to becoming a branch campus director, Dr. Redd taught humanities, women’s studies, and literature at Central Oregon and Portland Community College for twelve years.

She serves on the boards of her local Chamber of Commerce, Redmond Executive Leaders Association, and Saving Grace, Central Oregon’s only domestic violence and sexual assault prevention organization. A first-generation college graduate, Dr. Redd is passionate about access to quality education in rural communities and is committed to promoting the positive impact community colleges make in those communities.

Dr. Emily McRobbie

Dr. Emily McRobbie:  Dr. Emily McRobbie is currently employed as Assistant Professor of Adult and Higher Education at the University of Southern Maine. She teaches online graduate courses, including Facilitating Adult Learning, Leadership in Adult and Higher Education, and a support seminar for students completing internships and directed studies.

Prior college teaching experience includes a wide variety of topics, including diversity in education, curriculum and instruction, science education, and the community college.

Emily began her career in K-12 education as a teacher in the Sedona-Oak Creek Unified School District (B.S. in Elementary Education and Natural Sciences from State University of New York at Geneseo) specializing in experiential science learning (M.A. in Science Education from University of Texas at Austin). She became interested in adult learning while working in the Northern Arizona University-Sedona partnership program as faculty and mentor teacher.

At Coconino Community College in Flagstaff, AZ she served as Professional Development Coordinator and later Education Faculty leading three teacher education certificate and degree programs. The first Teaching and Learning Center was established and she led the Training and Development Committee for five years.

While completing a doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction (Ed.D. with a focus in Higher Education) at Northern Arizona University, she merged her interest in mindfulness and educator professional growth. She also mentored beginning teachers and managed a statewide online continuing education program for educators in Arizona.

Dr. McRobbie has participated in professional organizations and activities that embrace holistic development, learner-centered focus, and transformative adult learning. These include the Center for Courage and Renewal’s Circles of Trust facilitator training, Teaching for a Change conferences, International Symposia for Contemplative Research, and the Association for Contemplative Mind in Higher Education.
