GOOD NEWS: V’ACTE GRAND OPENING FOR CENTRALIZED CTE CAMPUS JANUARY 23

By R. Oliphant
Friday, January 12th, 2018

However, Sedona and Verde Valley taxpayers continue to pay for centralized CTE campus on west side of County will little or no access and for the lease on this new centralized facility (a kind of unfair double taxation for a CTE building)

The good news in Sedona and the Verde Valley is the grand opening of Valley Academy for Career and Technical Education Campus on January 23.  The grand opening will be held from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the new facility that is located at 3405 East State Route 89A in Cottonwood.

The facility is possible because earlier in the year V’ACTE entered a three-year lease for the 7700-square-foot facility that was the former home to Flip City Gymnastics.  V’ACTE, led by Bob Weir with the help of students and others, has been busily remodeling the facility.

This marks the second time there has been a centralized CTE facility in the Sedona/Verde Valley area.  In 2004 Yavapai Community College opened the Northern Arizona Regional Skills program on the Verde Campus in Clarkdale with great fanfare.  This CTE program, which was financed in part by a large grant from the federal government, was closed when Yavapai College decided to build a Career and Technology Education Center (CTEC) at the Prescott airport.

Since the CTE program was shuttered on the Verde Campus, CTE training on this side of the Mountain has done the best it could with limited funds and without a centralized facility.  Meanwhile, the College invested about $19 to 20 million into the Prescott facility with a substantial amount of revenue coming from Sedona/Verde Valley taxpayers.  Unfortunately, CTEC in Prescott cannot be accessed by east County high school students; only west County students.  Furthermore, because of the distance that must be traveled and the absence of inter-campus or public bus transportation, it is challenging for others living on the east side of the County to arrange schedules so they can attend classes at CTEC.

The Chair of the Community College Governing Board has suggested that he is ready to urge approval of millions of dollars for a new Community College CTEC on the east side of the County.  However, he also suggests he is waiting for plans to be submitted by the east side for such a facility before any action can take place.

While those plans are hopefully being drawn, CTE on the east side of the County will begin program development at the new leased centralized facility in Cottonwood.

The Verde Independent has reported that VACTE will also continue to offer satellite courses at Mingus Union High School, Camp Verde High School, and Sedona-Red Rock High School.  At Mingus it is intending to offer engineering, agriculture science, automotive technology, welding, film and TV, architectural design/drafting, business office management, sports medicine and theater tech. At Camp Verde High School, it intends to offer graphic and web design, agri-business, auto tech, culinary arts, cabinet making, audio-music recording and sports medicine. At Sedona-Red Rock High School it is hoping to offer digital communication, digital photography, film and TV and theater tech. Sedona also will add a sports medicine program next year

VACTE Superintendent Bob Weir told the Verde Independent in June that there is a possibility that V’ACTE will offer theater tech and business office management next year.  For more information about VACTE and the June 29 story written by Dan Engler in the Verde Independent, please click here.

RECENT GED STUDENTS GET FREE TUITION

By R. Oliphant
Friday, January 5th, 2018

2016 or 2017 GED grads may attend Yavapai Community College without paying tuition; but must provide for other related costs

Students who have recently received their GED will be able to attend Yavapai College tuition-free.

Penny Wills, Yavapai College president, said the College’s Adult Basic Education waives tuition and fees for all Yavapai County residents who earned their GED in 2016 or 2017, and who meet Arizona state residency requirements.

“We know after 12 credits of higher education they are more likely to vote, they are less likely—markedly—to be incarcerated, and they will be much more involved with their communities. That’s the type of person that I want in our society,” she said.

Students will still be responsible for other expenses, such as books, supplies, and testing fees, according to a post on the Yavapai College website.

SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTER (SBDC) TO INCREASE COUNSELING SERVICES

By R. Oliphant
Friday, January 5th, 2018

Camp Verde one of several communities to benefit (College provides matching funds received from federal government for program)

Due to additional grant funding awarded to the Regional Economic Development Center, the  services provided by the Small Business Development Center in FY17-2018 will be enhanced by increasing counseling hours in Black Canyon City, Chino Valley, Camp Verde, and Yarnell (Weaver Mountains communities). The SBDC provides counseling out of the Prescott Campus, Clarkdale Campus, Sedona Campus, Yavapai Apache Nation Economic Development Administration Office, Camp Verde Economic Development offices, Northern Arizona University in Prescott Valley, and Prescott Valley Library.

The Small Business Development Center staff is comprised of the Director, Jeri Denniston, and two business analysts, a part time analyst serving the Verde Valley (position currently vacant), and Richard Hernandez, a fulltime analyst serving the Quad City Area.

The SBDC is a grant funded program through the U.S. Small Business Administration for which Yavapai College provides matching cash funds. It is also one of the oldest SBDC programs operating in the state of Arizona for the past 27 years.

The SBDC provides one-on-one confidential counseling, a series of subsidized workshops, and a business resource library district-wide.

COLLEGE CTE EFFORTS IN VERDE VALLEY GO UP IN 2016-17

By R. Oliphant
Friday, January 5th, 2018

But East County Efforts Cannot Compare with West County CTE Development

Yavapai Community College upped its involvement in Career and Technical Education in the Verde Valley on the east side of the County in 2016-17. However,  its efforts pale in comparison to its overall efforts on the west side of the County.  On the east side of the County the Sedona Center was renovated and the Sedona Culinary Institute launched.

The College also increased its allied health programing on the east side of the County by launching a medical assistant program on the Verde Valley Campus in concert with the Valley Academy for Career and Technical Education (V’ACTE). It provides morning classes for students pursuing this credential.

It is also  began offering welding classes leading to AWS certification at Mingus high school. The classes are held at night at the Mingus welding laboratory. Students  include both Yavapai College  and V’ACTE high school students.

Meanwhile, on the west side of the County, the $20 million dollar state-of-the-art Career and Technical Education Center (CTEC) at the Prescott airport was remodeled to accommodate offices for the Mountain Institute Joint Technical Education District. The most recent estimated $7 million dollar renovation and parking lot improvements appear to have been mostly completed. The College also completed the $4 million plus renovation/new construction at the Prescott Valley Center. This will provide for growth of the College’s Allied Health Educational Programs. This facility will also accommodate the allied health training of the  Mountain Institute Joint Technical Education District students.
