The 2008 Principles of Land Use and Development of Verde Campus

What is the planIn 2008 a comprehensive planning document for the Verde Campus and the Sedona Center were prepared by the Greater Verde Valley Chapter of the Yavapai College Foundation.  It incorporated the views of the residents and political leaders throughout the Valley.  It was also recognized by the College Governing Board.

Most, but not all,  of its recommendations have been ignored.  The document remains viable for future planning of the Verde Campus and the Sedona Center.  To read or download a copy of the document, please click on the following:  2014 PRINCIPLES OF LAND USE APPROVED AUGUST 2008 SIXTH DRAFT

New NAU President could earn $700,000

By R. Oliphant

Northern Arizona University President Rita Cheng’s compensation could hit $700,000

Northern Arizona University President Rita Cheng’s compensation could hit $700,000 in 2017 if she meets performance goals set by the Arizona Board of Regents, according to a story in the Arizona Daily Sun written by Ms. Michelle McManimon. Click here to read the entire story.

RITA CHENGCheng receives $390,000 as her annual salary. Her housing, car allowances and pension plan contributions bring the total annual value of her compensation to about $520,000 a year. In addition to the salary and related contributions, the Board of Regents included a number of bonus clauses in her contract.

If the goals included in the bonus clauses are all met, it is estimated by the Arizona Daily Sun that by 2017 she could receive around $700,000. Some of the goals related to bonuses include the following:  a performance incentive payment of $10,000 if Cheng puts together a “high quality and effective” leadership team by July 1, 2015; $15,000 for reaching out to Arizona’s Native American communities and developing a plan to increase Native American student success rates; retaining at least 75 percent of NAU’s freshmen class in 2016-17, spending at least $39.2 million on research, awarding at least 4,625 bachelor’s degrees and having at least 3,200 community college transfer students enroll at NAU. An additional $10,000 bonus will be awarded if more than 43.2 percent of graduating seniors rate their entire educational experience at NAU as “excellent” on their senior surveys.

Other  incentives, according to the newspaper article,  require that “Cheng implement a plan to manage the growth of NAU’s extended campuses and Personalized Learning degree program, demonstrate the growth and financial stability of NAU’s allied health programs at the Phoenix Biomedical Campus, and personally lead efforts that substantially increase the amount of resources NAU brings in outside of tuition and research grants.”

Verde campus Executive Dean tells Advisory Committee nursing will not move “at this time”

nursing 1Verde Executive Dean James Perey told the Yavapai College Advisory Committee to the Governing Board that “we still have a two-year nursing program” in the Verde Valley.  Perey said that there are “no immediate plans to remove it at this time.” He also indicated in response to a question from the Chair of the Committee that the entire two-years of training could be completed in the Verde Valley.

Listeners were aware of the Dean cautiously using the phrases “no immediate plans” and “at this time.”

Perey explained that if something would happen in the future, the college would have to finish out the students on the Verde campus.

McCasland asks Governing Board to do away with ten-year master plan

Ms. Deb McCasland, one of the two newly elected Governing Board members, told the Governing Board at its November meeting that during her campaign  the people she met had serious concerns about how the College was using its funds. She said that this was especially true about services that should exist in the Verde Valley and do not.McCasland 1 She also said that the resounding victories of herself and Steve Irwin should send a message to the College that “our taxpayers do not like what is happening right now.”

She “strongly encouraged” the Board to set aside the Master Plan and stop its implementation.  She urged the Board to let the committees that have been formed in the Verde Valley provide input about the direction community college education should take there.

Verde campus shows no decline in credit hours taught

By R. Oliphant

Verde credit hours hold steady; Community College overall down 3.3% from a year earlier

Each semester Community College administrators measure the number of students who are enrolled and the total number of credits (called credit hours) the students cumulative take.  Student credit hours on the Yavapai Community College as a whole has declined from last fall by 3.3%. Because students are taking a few more classes in fall 2014 than they did a year earlier, this explains the difference between the the 4.1 percent drop in unduplicated headcount and the 3.3 percent drop in student credit hours.  (See the chart “Student Credit Hours” in story below.) The Verde campus student credit hours did not show a percentage decline.

The Prescott campus showed a drop of 1,167 student credit hours even though the Administration of Justice program was moved to that campus. Sedona shows a 96% drop, which was a result of the closing the digital film school. (See chart in story below entitled “Student Credit Hours.”)

Dual enrollment down 12%

Drop in dual enrollment at Community College unusual

Fall, 2014 dual enrollment on Yavapai Community College is off 12% from the fall of 2013. The drop is consider is unusual because dual enrollment has shown a steady increase  over the past five years.  This was also the first year that Sedona Redrock High School was added to the dual enrollment program.  The chart that follows shows the number of credit hours attributed to students on various campuses, online, and in dual enrollment high school courses.

STUDENT CREDIT HOURS CHART FALL 2014

Vice President Stuart Blacklaw said that the reduction is the result of two factors: First Yavapai College has asked the high schools to be “diligent about insuring student readiness for college level work.” In response, “high schools have made additional efforts to insure students are ready for these college level courses.” Second, some high school districts “chose not to offer courses that had been offered in the past.” There was a net drop of 426 credit hours from fall 2013 to the fall 2014.
